  • YOUR BOMB, OR OURS?

It’s difficult not to sound depressingly similar to one of the two camps: one that blithely assumes our Planet is bent on ‘Business as Usual’; and one that implies the ‘End of The World’ is nigh. Both views become tiresome and trite. History indicates both views are accurate.
    Flag of Earth

In private conversations with associates it seems amazing that individuals speak of events projected into the future as though the World will be preserved in some crystal prism, as it is today but likely ‘better’, for the next fifty or a hundred years. Medical science, health and education are assumed to be independent of present realities and will somehow live on, unchanged but ‘better’.

We get ‘odd’ looks when we let slip, “as you would”, inferences that trajectories in global politics and economics plainly indicate an imminent clash of Historical proportions. While people cannot think of anything by which to deny the obvious, their immediate response is to retreat behind the attitude of ‘Unthinkable’.

The world we live in today was always Unthinkable.

This glorious Earth, replete with Life and energy and great beauty. In our Age there are more mysteries unraveled than at any time in the History of Humankind. Even the History of Humankind is more accessible today, to more people, than at any other time. We, children and adults alike, have greater access to scientific wonders, the unraveling of the Forces of the Cosmos, the impelling Forces of Animal Nature and the seductive Forces of Human Endeavour.

Nothing that Science or History teaches us gives the faintest hint that we will survive the next few years as more than a ragged remnant of our Race.

There will be a remnant. Survivors will have more on their minds than to fret over our dreams.

The idea that a global Caliphate, for instance, based on some Jihad will coexist with a Sino-Russo Asiatic alliance for the furtherance of harmony, illumination and edification seems laughable. Forces that exist in the world today would fight to their own absolute destruction to prevent such. Those forces have the power to roll up the heavens like a scroll if they choose to use them and Human Nature being what it is, they will.

On the other hand, what benign Historic force might constrain the mighty populace of a flourishing Earth to live within its ‘Bounds’.

What are the Bounds of Earth, anyway?

Already we hear constant cries of Global Warming and Environmental Disaster. Will some wise and magnanimous Superpower enact an irresistible edict by which all Mankind will abide within the Earth’s capacity to support it?

China’s attempt at demographic shaping has worked! They now have twenty million fewer females than males. That’s a fairly high number of involuntary homosexuals unless some other mechanism can be found to either normalise gender proportions or satisfy the effects of natural male needs.

On the other hand, China already demonstrated not only the need but the capacity to exert ‘force’ to manipulate social consciousness. Tianamen Square comes to mind but even so, it is patently impossible for China to permit Tibet and other Western Regions of their vast domains to simply, become independent. Law and Order in China is the opposite of Chaos on an unimaginable scale.

    Unimaginable so far.

As Europe and the US of A descend into the Age of the Spartans and the Amtrak Wars it will be no surprise to see the extent of individual initiative and innovation, criminal acts, to which perfectly sane people will sink in order to remain at the top of the food chain.

So Yes. While Ahmadinejad and Putin might proceed on their separate and destructive paths, and while the Free World can no doubt indulge them for a while, eventually one of the Economists will blink.

Once the personal interests of some of the few hundred people on Earth who possess the total wealth of the planet become threatened, mere nations will be of no account.

Survivors will hold no national ethos within the narrow purview of their survival. At first they will value today. After a while they will value tomorrow. Eventually Mankind will struggle into its Cosmic Future, shaped more by the potential it possessed when it arrived ON this planet than by the supposed tragedy of its recent past.
